CMS Ceramics is a community clay studio for the public to learn about the Ceramic Arts. Various workshops are offered on how to make sculpture, functional pottery, musical instruments, tile, murals, beads, and jewelry. Local Clay Dig is another workshop that involves digging clay from the property, processing, then making anything from it.
Currently, CMS Gallery has various types of artwork for sale made by Chris Scamehorn. All of the workshops listed above are examples of the various types of work that Chris creates. Once the residency gets off its feet, artists will be able to exhibit their work .
CMS Residency is a program (in the making) that brings in Ceramic Artists for a month to make, demonstrate, and exhibit their work.
Once up and running CMS Ceramics will be a place for the community to come learn how and make things out of clay. Open studio hours will be posted for clay club members. Workshops and individual lessons will be ongoing.
I am working on raising funds through Kickstarter, an online fundraising website. http://www.kickstarter.com/profile/cmsceramics
. With the $ I hope to get, I will purchase more wheels, upgrade kilns for proper voltage, and set the ball rolling for the Clay Residency.
I have an BFA in Ceramics from Grand Valley State University and an MFA in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Since graduating in 2010, I have been making art full-time in my studio/gallery in Fairfield, Iowa.
I love to make beautiful pieces that are animistic, ergonomic and functional. The alchemy of ceramics has captivated me for years and it is the foundation on which I create. The process involves transforming one material (clay) into another material (rock) through utilizing the four elements; Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. I feel a special connection with my environment through using localized clay and creating works that reflect Nature’s beauty and animism.
We are all a part of Nature, Spirit and Life. My work is a reflection, action and manifestation of this philosophy. Life is Art / Art is Life.
